Broken Embraces (15)

Wed 6 Jan, 6 & 8.15pm £4.50 (£3.50)

Spain 2009 128 mins. Dir. Pedro Almadóvar. With Penelope Cruz, Blanca Portillo, Lluis Homar.

Almodovar has always managed to combine elegance and exuberance, and his latest movie is no exception, using a head-spinningly sophisticated film within a film motif. A tragic romantic thriller, using a dual narrative with father/son and gay/ straight opposites – unfolding in two time periods.

Army Of Crime (15)

Wed 13 Jan, 7.30pm only £4.50 (£3.50)

France 2009 139 mins. Dir. Robert Guédiguian. With Simon Abkarian, Virginie Ledoyen, Robinson Stévenin.

Set in occupied war-time Paris, this depiction of fighters focuses on the immigrants from Hungary, Romania and Armenia who joined Jews and Communists in the underground struggle against the Nazis. Guédiguian consciously wished to reference the classic ‘Army of Shadows’ (Jean-Pierre Melville), whilst drawing on his own Armenian heritage and wishing to show the ambivalence that existed amongst some French citizens towards the Resistance movement.

Three Miles North Of Molkom (15)

Wed 20 Jan, 6 & 8.15pm £4.50 (£3.50)

UK 2007 112 mins. Dir. Corinna Villari-Mcfarlane, Robert Cannan

This gentle documentary reveals all about the strange happenings in Angsbacka, a secluded spot in the beautiful lakeside forests of Sweden, which every year plays host to the No Mind Festival of eco-spiritualism. A very moving portrait of a diverse group of voyagers towards a knowledge no book or university could give them.

Mid August Lunch (U)

Wed 27 Jan, 6 & 8.15pm, £4.50 (£3.50)

Italy 2008 76 mins. Dir. Gianni Di Gregorio. With Gianni Di Gregorio, Valeria de Franciscis, Marina Cacciotti.

Written, directed, starring and even filmed in his own flat, Di Gregorio picked up awards at the London and Venice Festivals for this charming, humorous short story. To keep his landlord at bay over rent arrears he agrees to look after the latter’s mother over the holiday weekend. She arrives with another relative in tow and soon Gianni is surrounded by a battery of 80 year olds.
